Milan Knížák is an artist whose work and ideas are fascinating, disturbing and provocative in their uncompromising directness. Since the 1960s he has been one of the most important international artists whose work extends beyond the traditional artistic categories. He was named chairman of the eastern section of the international art movement Fluxus, and his ground-breaking work appears in the collections of prominent galleries such as MoMA in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, Kunsthalle Hamburg and MAK in Vienna. His Broken Music was included in a list of the most important compositions of the 20th century. Any kind of stagnation is alien to Milan Knížák’s creativity, and this publication has therefore been conceived as an “incomplete retrospective”. As well as his key actions, it includes a selection of his manifestos and essays from the 1960s to the present day, together with paintings, objects, poems, short stories and examples of the notation for his rock band, Aktual.
Czech Photography of the 20th Century, published simultaneously in Czech and English versions, is the first book to present the main trends, figures, and works of Czech photography from the beginning to the end of the last century to such a large extent. Its 517 plates include not only the most important, well-known photographs and photomontages, but also works that have long been forgotten or are published for the first time. The book is arranged in seventeen chapters, supplemented with chronologies of the most important events in twentieth-century Czech photography and history.
